The Lord's Prayer

Alan Wherry

Matthew 6:9-13 King James Version

9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

There are many versions of the Lord's Prayer, including modern attempt to render it into current English. Most fail to capture the magic and majesty of this - "Our Father which art in heaven...." instead of "Who art" which most Sahaja Yogis say, captures the mystery, the numinous aspect of 'which'. This is the version I learned as a boy in Ireland, but we had, instead of "forgive us our debts" we had, "forgive us our trespasses" which I prefer, 'debts' in this day and age is somewhat misleading and trespasses - which is archaic, as is much of the English in the KJV, is also literary and it's about committing an offense against someone, or the maryadas as we yogis would understand it.
